Green Pools are No Fun!

This heat has been great for swimming. But it is also the perfect conditions for algae to break out. In fact, it might seem that an algae bloom happens almost over night. Algae reproduces at a much faster rate in warm water. If we don't increase the amount of chlorine in our swimming pool to compensate for extra bathers, longer usage and the faster rate of algae growth, we can easily end up with a green pool almost over night. Keep algae away with 3 simple steps each week. Sanitize with pucks, shock weekly, and add a maintenance dose of algaecide to prevent a swimming pool nightmare. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Ask us about Aquabrite tabs to help keep your water clean, clear and safe.

Popular Pool Renovations
Interesting Image

Now is the time to schedule your pool renovations.

1. Enhance Your Surroundings

Consider a new or updated pool deck. You can extend the look of interior flooring to experience an outdoor family room with man-made or natural materials. Stain existing concrete. Or brush up dated, cracked or stressed concrete patios with a thick overlay and new finish. Add a sound or media system, or even an outdoor kitchen or fireplace for greater enjoyment.
2. Add a Hot Tub
Experience the relaxation of a soothing soak or the health benefits from warm water therapy. There’s a hot tub for every need, every setting, and every budget.
3. Replace Your Liner
Change out your old, faded, hanging liner now. Choose an updated new pattern, color, and design.
4. Add a Water Feature
Waterfalls come in all shapes and sizes from rock features to planters with sheer descents. Come and see us for some options.
5. Think technology
New automatic cleaners have units that “walk” along your pool floor. These newer systems require practically no supervision. And you can still swim while the system cleans your pool. Digital controls make operating pool equipment easier than ever, letting you control lighting, heating, and cleaning with the touch of the button or with your tablet or smartphone.Upgrades like a salt chlorinator system or a solar cover and heater can improve both functionality and efficiency.
Keep in mind, you don’t have to do everything at once. Pool renovations can be done over several seasons, allowing you to make the improvements and fund your investment at a pace that works for you.

Livvy Loves Our New Hot Tubs and You Will Too
Interesting Image

We have several new hot tub models in the store with more on the way! All of our hot tubs come with a free cover and steps! Come on in and and look around. Here are the top 5 reasons to buy a hot tub according to the APSP.

1. Hot tubs are affordable.
Portable hot tubs are more affordable than ever before, due to efficient manufacturing practices and competing brands. "We've managed to merge higher-end features into our hot tubs while lowering the price points, because that's what customers are demanding".

2. Hot tubs fit anywhere.
The portable hot tub industry has adapted to consumers lifestyles. Hot tubs come in all different shapes and sizes, from two-person hot tubs to 10-person models. Hot tubs can be installed indoors or outdoors, in as little area as 64 square feet or less. Another emerging trend in hot tubs is swim spas, designed for those wanting the convenience of swimming, training or just relaxing.

3. You can use a hot tub year round no matter where you live.
Hot tubs can be used year-round in any climate. Many owners use their hot tubs more in the winter, when bubbly heat remarkably offsets falling snow.

4. Hot tubs are easy to maintain and are energy efficient.
Newer technology has allowed the hot tub owner to keep water clean and clear with a couple of minutes of weekly maintenance. New models are being produced that will meet new APSP energy efficiency standards and to meet consumers' demands for greener products.

5. Hot tubs provide "vacations/therapy" 365 days of the year.
Hot tubs provide the ideal venue to connect with family and friends. They provide a multitude of health benefits ranging from stress reduction to muscle recovery. "We've really seen a push toward hot water therapy. Having a place to relax, connect and heal after a long day can really be the ultimate gift that keeps on giving."

Where Do I Start if I Know I Want a Pool?
This is a huge question that anybody looking for a swimming pool has. When you think about starting the process it seems overwhelming with all the questions you have. This is a question we hear all the time and for good reason. Even though there can literally be hundreds of questions to ask, I am going to focus on a few things that really determine what I feel is the absolute basics of where to start.
 Financing
How are you going to pay for your pool? Are you able to pay cash? Are you thinking about putting your pool on a credit card? Most people are looking to obtain some type of financing. A few years back with the housing market booming along everybody could get a second mortgage or credit line to pay with. With the bubble popping it is not so easy anymore. If you have not checked with your local bank I would suggest doing so before you spend a lot of time and effort only to find out you can’t obtain financing. You can find more financing information on our web site here: http://www.parrotbaypoolsnc.com/financing

Plot plan
What is a plot plan you might ask? It is basically a drawing of your property showing any structures, easements, set back lines, and restrictions. You have to have a plot plan available to do any drawings for permit applications. Typically this document is found in the pile of  paper work that you signed when you bought your property.
 Utilities
This is an issue that effects just about everyone in some way. You will need to have your utilities marked so you can determine where you can put a pool. Phone and cable lines can be moved fairly easy and and are not typically a big deal. You can talk to your local provider about how they go about it. Electric lines are the big story. National Electric codes call for any overhead electric lines to be minimum 10 feet from the edge of a pool. Underground lines have to be 5 feet from the edge of the pool. If you determine that the lines will be to close to where you want to put your pool they can be moved. The cost is not cheap and will be mostly determined by what your local utility will charge you. We handle calling the utilities for you once your first deposit payment has been made.
 Insurance
This might seem like the obvious, but if you have not checked with your homeowners insurance it might be a good idea. Most insurance companies have requirements for safety measures that need to be met. Although cities, towns, and even counties and townships will require safety measures that will meet insurance requirements in the rare case they might not. It’s a good idea to check just to be safe.
 Homeowners Associations
This is not one we run into a lot, but more than what you would think. We have had projects that could not happen because the association would not approve it. Permits and plans can be approved through the local city, town, and county but not the homeowner association and your pool plans shut down. Check to save yourself some frustration.

If you check these things first you can save some frustration down the line when you really get into the planning stages of your pool.

Most Common Swimming Pool Building Mistakes

Most Common Swimming Pool Building Mistakes
1.Shopping like you are buying a car
Swimming pools are custom construction projects, and are built by individuals and pool contractors with different standards. Unlike an automobile, which is manufactured in a factory under controlled conditions, all swimming pools are not built the same. Much of what you do not see will impact the cost and quality of your pool. The more you know and understand about swimming pool construction, the better buyer you will be.
2. Not asking questions about licensure and service after the sale
Is your pool builder a NC licensed contractor? Find out here www.nclbgc.org. What makes them qualified to build your custom swimming pool? Do your homework. Get 3 or 4 estimates from reputable swimming pool companies in the area. Does your pool company also service the pool after the sale? Do they have a dedicated service department for maintenance, repairs, and cleanings?Or do they only install the pool and then it's up to you to find service afterwards?
3.Shopping based on price
Usually, if a deal seems too good to be true, it is. If you shop for price alone, you are destined to be disappointed. Consider the saying, "If you think the cost of a professional is expensive, wait until you hire an amateur!"
4.Shopping over the phone for a swimming pool
It's impossible. Take the time to meet with a swimming pool contractor and have them provide you with an estimate. Go to the store and make sure it is inviting and welcoming. A pool purchase is not a one time buy. You will create a relationship with this company over years to come. Choose wisely.
5. Assuming swimming pools cost less to build in the wintertime
We have seen increases in prices, gas increases, and insurance premium hikes. Pools don't get cheaper as time goes on; building a swimming pool will never be less expensive than it is today.
6. Focusing on the aesthetics and not the mechanics of your swimming pool
Hydraulic design, flow rates, pipe size, pump and filter types, chemical management systems, and many other factors will make a big difference in the ability of your swimming pool to stay clean and sanitized. Do your homework about the way a pool is built, not just the way it looks. Parrot Bay Pools offers upgraded plumbing and energy efficiency.
7. Not thinking about safety
Swimming pools can be a great place to have fun, exercise, and just enjoy the outdoors. They can also be dangerous. Make sure you know what your city/county requires for barriers and fencing. More importantly, make sure you protect the ones you care for, and protect the ones that cannot protect themselves. Parrot Bay Pools offers black aluminum fencing if desired and is available to answer your barrier requirement questions.
As always, Parrot Bay Pools is here to answer your questions.
