When Do I Start My Inground Pool?

Running through the backyard sprinkler may have worked when you were a kid, but now that you’ve got your own house there are considerably more luxurious ways to beat the heat.
Planning and building a swimming pool isn’t something you should do on a whim. It’s a big-time investment that can both dramatically alter your landscape and lifestyle.
Every year we have people who call us in April, and they want pools built so they can be swimming in them by Memorial Day. Pool building is really more complicated than that. If someone wants a pool by Memorial Day, they’d be smart to start the process now.

Getting Started

That process must start with prioritizing your needs and wants, starting with these questions:

• Is my yard suited to a pool?
• What zoning restrictions do I face?
• What’s my pool budget?
• Am I prepared to care for a pool, or am I in the position to hire help?
• Will this pool be used primarily for exercise, entertaining, kid play or lounging?
• What should I know about safety and insurance?

Pool Differences and Pricing- How to Choose

When deciding to add a pool to your backyard, the first question is most likely going to be, how much will an inground swimming pool or an above ground swimming pool cost? Pool prices can vary depending on the type of pool you want (vinyl liner swimming pool, fiberglass swimming pools, above ground swimming pool or gunite swimming pool), so we thought we'd help provide you with a quick overview of what to expect with the cost of your swimming pool.

Above Ground Pools:

There are two pricing components in purchasing an above ground pool, and that is the ‘kit' and the ‘installation'. Many swimming pool companies only sell above ground pool kits, and do not actually do the installation. The average above ground swimming pool kit will cost between $1500 and $4500, depending on the quality of the pool. Typically, the more resin and less metal the pool has, the higher the price will be and the longer it will last. It will also have a longer warranty period. The installation costs of above ground pools usually run $1500-$3000, depending on the size and type of pool. Keep in mind that oval pools normally cost more to install than round pools, and the kits are also more expensive. Also, be sure to ask what comes with your above ground pool. Most good swimming pool companies will include your ladder, winter cover, pump and filter system, and a maintenance kit.

In recent years, big box stores like Wal-Mart and others have started selling aboveground pools also. The main manufacturer of these pools is Intex. Such ‘set and fill' pools are very inexpensive, usually costing $100-$800 and in most cases last 1-2 summers before they need to be replaced. If you expect your investment to last longer you will definitely need to purchase it from a pool company such as Parrot Bay.

Vinyl Liner Inground Pools:

Vinyl Liner pools are the least expensive inground pool option. This is mainly due to the fact that the cost of materials for a vinyl liner are cheap. For a very basic, medium sized vinyl liner pool with a patio one can expect to spend between $20,000-$30,000, although other options such as heaters, covers, decking, water features, etc will certainly escalate this price.

Fiberglass Pools:

Fiberglass Pools cost more than vinyl liner pools to install because a fiberglass shell and shipping cost so much more than the cost of a vinyl liner pool kit in terms of raw materials. If a consumer were to buy just a fiberglass pool shell w/shipping, they will likely spend $12,000-$20,000 depending on the size of the pool. To have a pool contractor install the pool, one can expect to spend in the neighborhood of $25,000-$40,000 with the pool and installation. Again, options such as heater, lights, water features, type of patio, and other accessories will escalate this price.

Concrete/Gunite Pools:

In most cases, but not always, concrete pools will have the highest initial cost, and will vary greatly depending on the size of the pool and the material used for the pool's surface (ie white plaster, quartz, pebbletec, etc). The reason why concrete pools tend to cost more is due to the labor involved with their installation. In the majority of cases, a normal sized concrete pool will cost between $30,000-$60,000.

Thinking about Heating Your Pool?

1. Gas v. Electric Heater

An electric heat pump is a type of pool heater that will use the warm air from outside and run it through the compressor to heat the pool by converting the air to heated water. The upside of a heat pump is they are usually less expensive to run, the downfall is they can be very slow to heat up the water and do not work well once the outside temperature drops much below 55 degrees.

A gas pool heater is very efficient a quickly heats up the pool water. The downside to a gas heater is the cost of fuel fluctuates and the maintenance on the gas heater is much higher than electric. However, the gas heater works well no matter what the outside temperature is.

Saltwater Swimming Pool Facts

Salt Pool Facts:
• Salt pools, whether they are vinyl swimming pools or fiberglass pools, are still sanitized using chlorine. A salt chlorine generator turns salt into chlorine to sanitize the swimming pool water. Chlorine produced from a salt chlorine generator is less harsh on skin and eyes and has no chlorine odors. Salt pool water is known for its silky-smooth feeling.

• The ocean's salt water has a salt content of approximately 35,000 ppm. The salt in a salt... pool has a low concentration of salt at 3,000 – 6,000 ppm. That is approximately 1/10th the level of salt in the ocean. This means that if you properly maintain your salt pool and keep the salt levels between 3,000 - 6,000 ppm with your control unit, the pool water will not taste salty at all.

• It is very important that you still regularly balance the water in your salt pool. Just like a regular chlorine pool, a salt pool should maintain proper pH, Total Alkalinity, Calcium Hardness and Stabilizer levels in order to prevent scale formations on your salt pool system and maximize sanitizing effectiveness. Test pool water on a weekly basis and use standard pool chemical procedures to adjust the levels.

How to Winterize Your Inground Pool

How to Winterize Your Inground Pool

 1. One week prior to closing your pool, add 14 fluid ounces of Pool Magic + PHOSfree for every 10,000 gallons of water directly into the skimmer.
2. Brush and vacuum the pool thoroughly to remove all dir...t, leaves and debris.
3. To prevent metal stains, add MetalFree and Stain and Scale For every 20,000 gallons, add 1 liter of MetalFree and 1 quart (32 ounces) of Stain and Scale 2 by pouring around the perimeter of the pool.
4. Adjust the pH to the proper level. For all pools, pH should be between 7.4 and 7.6.
5. Adjust the Total Alkalinity to the proper level.
6. To help protect your pool, adjust the Calcium Hardness to 200-400 ppm
7. Add 1 quart (32 ounces) of Algae Control per 25,000 gallons by mixing with water in a large bucket and pouring around the perimeter of the pool. Wait one hour before following next step.
8. Shock the pool at the rate of 2 pounds per 10,000 gallons by broadcasting the product around the perimeter of the pool.
9. Bring the chlorine or sanitizer of choice to an appropriate level.
10. Let the pump run for at least one complete cycle after adding chemicals. Backwash or manually clean the filter.
11. Lower the water level below the skimmer and all return lines (normally about 18 inches below the tile line). Alternatively, you can blow out the lines to remove water from the lines and then use our plugs so you don’t have to drain the water level down.
12. Remove the drain plugs from the pump strainer basket housing, the pump volute, the filter tank, and the heater. Keep the drain plugs handy, they will be used in Step 16.
13. Drain the automatic pool cleaner’s booster pump and the automatic chlorinator, if you use one.
14. Turn off the main power supply and remove the ON and OFF trippers from the time clock.
15. Position the multi-port valve handle between any two settings. This will ensure all ports are partially open to allow for freeze expansion.
16. Place all the drain plugs in the strainer basket of the pump and replace the strainer cover.
17. When the water has completely drained out of the plumbing lines, put Winterizing Plugs into the return line and skimmer lines.
18. Place a Gizzmo into the skimmer to seal the skimmer pipe and absorb any ice pressure.
19. Refill the pool back to between 4-6 inches below the skimmer inlet in vinyl-lined pools or 4-6 inches below the tile line plaster pools.
20. Remove all non-permanent articles such as ladders, hoses, over-the-top skimmers, etc. If you have an automatic pool cleaner, remove it and drain it completely. Lay the hoses out straight in a non-freezing location.
21. Inflate and tie Air Pillows to a stationary object. An average-sized pool, 16’ x 32’, typically requires 4-6 air pillows. If you are using multiple pillows, tie them together using the grommets located on the pillow’s corners.
22. Cover the pool using a Safety Cover or Winter Cover and Leaf Net Cover.
23. If necessary, fill and place Water Bags around the edge of the pool. In normal conditions, these can be placed 18 inches apart, but in windy areas, they should be placed end-to-end.
24. During the winter season, check the chemical balance every two-three weeks, and inspect the pool water by pulling back the cover slightly. If staining or scaling is beginning to develop, bring a sample of your water in to be tested.

We take a lot of vacations, we spend a lot of quality time with our families, we are less concerned with the worries of the world. You might think that sounds careless or lazy. Not the case, never confuse a vacation with laziness. Parrots work hard, harder than everyone else. We know that when everyone is sleeping, we are working, because it takes a long time to create the good life. It's not handed to us. When you work that hard and care that much, you have to rest and recharge. Like everything else, we do that big. It might be with a lush backyard pool design or with a tropical vacation. What we Parrots have in common is a zest for life, no wasted time, an ambitious spirit, and a need to create the life we desire, not the one handed to us. We all have heard the saying, It's not what life gives you, it's what you do with it, it's how you respond. Parrots all have learned this. We know it very well and when everyone else gives up, we don't. We create the life, love, business, family, etc. that we want. Some of you reading this are thinking, that's not possible.
