How to Clean and Purge Your Spa

Before draining your spa you must take proper procedure for a clean and proper maintenance of your water and spa condition. Using spa purge before draining your spa restores the plumbing to original condition and takes out all organic waste such as oils, lotions, cosmetics, hair products, sweat build up, etc., that your body  tends to leave in the water.

DIRECTIONS TO PURGING THE SPA WITH SPA PURGE
1.  Remove cartridge filter elements
2. With Spa water temperature at 95 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, add entire contents of 1liter   SPA Purge bottle to spa water
3. Run jets a minimum of 5 min.( if excessive foaming occurs turn jets off)
4. Maintain water temperature and allow spa to circulate overnight with jets off.
5. Drain, rinse and then refill spa and reinstall filter elements. Proceed with normal spa maintenance.
Before refilling the spa clean the hot tub with Clean and Perfect which cleans away excess grease and dirt left in the spa. Just spray and wipe for cleaning use.

Hot Tub Water Chemistry and Maintenance

Thinking of investing in a hot tub, but worried about the maintenance? Many clients ask this before purchasing a hot tub. Making sure your hot tub water is clean and maintained is a major part of owning a hot tub. No one wants to hang out in a hot tub with dirty water. We are here to help you keep your hot tub sparkling and make sure it lasts you for many years to come.

You should start by testing your spa water by using test strips or bringing a water sample to Parrot Bay Pools & Spas. If you are using Chlorine as a primary sanitizer, you need to use a test strip that is suited for chlorine while if you are using bromine, you need to use a Bromine test strip. Chemical test strips measure the pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness and chlorine level of spa water. Some of our clients also use non-chlorine chemicals in their hot tubs. If you are using non-chlorine chemicals then use the testing procedure for your chemicals.

The first step after testing the water is to correct a hardness problem if one exists. The calcium hardness should be between 250 ppm and 400 ppm. If the water is too soft, it will foam and cause corrosion of your spa equipment. If the water is too hard, it will cause mineral build up on the heater element. The typical problem is the water is too soft and requires the addition of calcium to raise the hardness of the water. If you have a high metal content this should also be addressed by using a metal sequestering agent, such as our Metal Out.

Next, you can adjust the pH and alkalinity, which are related and use the same chemicals to adjust the levels. Make the first adjustment using the alkalinity reading. If the alkalinity is too high, use a decreaser
product to lower the level and if it is already too low, use a product to raise the level. Add the chemical in low doses, as it might take a long time to change the alkalinity. It is important to not overdose when doing this as it will take a lot of the opposite chemical to remedy the issue. When the alkalinity is in range, it is time to correct the pH readings by using. You want the pH to be between 7.0 and 7.8.

Now you can add the sanitizer. If the water is cloudy or smells, you can shock the water by bringing the level to around 10 ppm, but DO NOT use the spa when the
sanitizer level is this high. Even if you are using a non-chlorine sanitizer I would still recommend using a chlorine shock at least every other time you shock the spa. Shocking the water will ensure all bacteria and organic compounds are destroyed. You can leave on the pumps and uncover the spa to help dissipate the excess levels or chlorine back to the normal levels of between 3 ppm and 5 ppm. Once it is within these normal ranges, it is safe to use the spa again.

You also need to make sure the water is clean on an ongoing basis by shock treating the water and maintaining the sanitizer level. The warm water of
hot tubs would provide an ideal breeding ground for potentially harmful microorganisms if you do not initiate and maintain an effective sanitizer system to control them.

In order to keep your water fresh, you should add your sanitizer of choice or some shock after you use the hot tub and cycle the pumps on before your cover it. This way, the chlorine will work on killing any bacteria that might have remained after your spa session.

Parrot Bay Pools & Spas has other chemicals such as de-foamers and clarifiers that will help you keep your spa water clear and clean. We have a Chemical Starter Kit that contains all the chemicals that are necessary to maintain high quality spa water,

Can a Hot Tub Relieve Stress?

Yes, a hot tub can relieve the stress you face on a day to day basis. Hot tubs and spas can help relieve stress that creates muscle tension and restricts blood flow. Stress can cause headaches, sleeplessness, fatigue, and soreness. How we feel physically can affect our thoughts, our moods, and our ability to enjoy life to the fullest. Regular use of a hot tub allows you to relax and relieve the tension.  The key to relaxation in a hot tub is finding your perfect fit.  To achieve the perfect fit you will need to make sure the seats aren’t too big or too small. Having the jets in the right location and in numerous locations give you a massage all over to help relive tension. Having adjustable jets is another way to customize your seat so you can have the best experience possible while in your hot tub. By adding in aromatherapy using either a liquid or crystal version, such as Spazazz, you can increase your relaxation and decrease your stress. With the stress melting away you will be able to enjoy life more fully.

If you need help finding the perfect fitting hot tub, call Parrot Bay Pools & Spas.

Easy Hot Tub Start Up

It's that time of year, cooler weather has arrived and thoughts begin to turn to firing up your hot tub for the season. We would like to give you some easy tips to make the start up as trouble free as possible.

1. Filling Your Hot Tub: One of the most common mistakes when filling a hot tub is not purging the air out of the plumbing. Remember to place your garden hose directly into the bottom of the skimmer and fill the hot tub through the lines. This purges the air as you fill.

2. Install a Clean Filter: A clean filter is vital to keeping the impurities out of your hot tub water. Always start with either a new filter or a filter that has been chemically cleaned and your hot tub will stay sparkling. It's also a good idea to always keep a second filter on hand for uninterrupted hot tub use.
3. Hot Tub Covers: Covers are notorious for producing a musty smell after a while. Instead of purchasing a new one be sure to wipe down the inside of the cover at least every 90 days with a bleach and water solution.

How to Vacuum Your Pool
1. Gather the necessary items: vacuum, vacuum hose, pool pole, skimmer basket vacuum attachment, leaf net
2. Skim the top of the pool with a net for floating debris. Collect any large or heavy items that may get stuck in your suction line while vacuuming.
3. Attach the vacuum head to the end of the pols
4. Place the vacuum adapter over the leaf basket in the skimmer. Always leave your leaf basket in place because it will keep large items from clogging your pipes. connect the vacuum pool hose to the top of the vacuum head and place it in the water. It must stay under the water the entire vacuum time
5. Prime the hose by filling it with water; attach it to the skimmer basket attachment
6. Now vacuum by holding the pole and slowly passing the vacuum along the sides and bottom of the pool.

Why Shock My Pool?
"Shock" really isn't a product. It is an action you perform when you add an extra dose of chlorine to your pool. Over a period of time, sometimes relatively short, the chlorine in your pool combines with nitrogen containing contaminants, such as perspiration, urine, and/or fertilizer, and forms chloramines. When this occurs you may still get a chlorine reading, but it isn't as effective at keeping your pool sanitary. Therefore, you must super chlorinate (shock) the pool to reactivate the combined chlorine and it can then sanitize the pool water.
When Should I Shock?
  • Routinely every 7-10 days
  • After a party or if you have had a large number of swimmers
  • After rain
  • If the chlorine level drops below 1.0
  • When your water is cloudy
  • After fertilizing near the pool area

How to Clean Your Salt Cell
1. Turn pump and filter off
2. Remove the cell from its position in the plumbing by loosening the unions on both ends of the cell.
3. You will need a small plastic bucket, water, and muriatic acid
4. Fill the bucket with 3-4" of water.
5. Set the turbo cell on end in the water.
6. Add 1- 1/2" of muriatic acid to the water in the bucket. Let the cell sit in the solution for 5 minutes.
7. Turn the cell over and let the opposit end sit in the solution for 5 minutes. You will submerse the cord, which will not be affected by the mild acid solution
8. Look in both ends of the cell to assure calcium deposits are removed, if not repeat cleaning procedure.
9. Rinse cell with fresh water and replace in the plumbing line securely. Tighten the unions before restoring power to the pump. - excerpted from Hayward
**I would recommend using chemical resistant gloves**- excerpted from Jamie's common sense
When Do I Clean My Salt Cell?
The cell requires maintenance when the "Inspect cell" light comes on. It should routinely be cleaned every 3-6 months. Parrot Bay can also clean your cell for you during openings or closing or any time requested.
